Managing Australia's Borders

Recreation and Education

Recreation and activities

There are organised recreation and activities programs for people in immigration residential housing. The programs are developed in consultation with the participants and the Detention Services Provider.

The programs include excursions such as picnics and trips to local shops, other community facilities including libraries, swimming pools or cinemas.

Regular trips to the supermarket are organised so people in immigration residential housing can purchase groceries and personal items.

Education

All families with children who enter into immigration residential housing are referred to the Minister for possible consideration for community detention arrangements within four weeks of being detained.

In line with community standards, children and minors in community detention have access to primary and secondary schooling as well as access to English language classes. Informal community based education for adults is supported and encouraged.
