Learn English in the Classroom or at Home
On this page
The AMEP teaches basic English. It also teaches you about Australia and its people.
If you do not speak English, it may be hard to get a job or make friends.
Learning English can be hard. Some people do not learn as fast as other people. Don’t worry, just try to practise English as much as possible. Try to practise when you are shopping or visiting friends or when you are at home.
English classes – getting started
Before you start English classes with the AMEP you need to meet your teacher to:
- assess your level of English
- find out about your classes or talk about learning from home
- talk about childcare needs
- work out a plan that shows how you will meet your educational and career goals.
Learning English in the classroom
Learning English in the classroom means going to regular English classes at a learning centre.
AMEP classes take place at different times so if you have a job, or need to look after your children, you can still come to class.
You can study English part-time or full-time. There are classes during the day, in the evenings and on weekends.
Going to class
It is important that you go to every English lesson you can. Telephone your teacher if you can’t go to a class.
You may not be able to go to class if:
- you have a medical appointment
- you are sick or looking after someone who is sick
- you have a job interview
- you get a job
- you move house.
Learning English at home – distance learning
If you can’t go to AMEP English classes, you can learn English from your home.
When you learn English from home with distance learning, a teacher can talk with you and help you by telephone.
You will learn from books and tapes. You will practise reading newspapers, asking for information, filling in forms and writing letters.
What you will need to do:
- spend at least 5 hours learning each week
- talk with your teacher often
- try to practise English as much as possible.
Learning English from a tutor – Home Tutor Scheme
If you can't go to AMEP English classes, or if you go to classes for less than six hours each week, you can practise English at your home with a home tutor.
A home tutor is a person who comes to your home, usually once a week for one or two hours to help you learn English.
Your tutor will help you practise speaking, listening, reading and writing.
What you will need to do:
- find a quiet place to meet and learn
- practise English every day.
Learning English in the countryside – rural and regional tuition
If you live in a small town or on a farm you can still learn English with the AMEP.
Talk to your service provider about learning English if you don’t live in a city.
