Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
Glossary - Word Meanings on the AMEP Website
- Adult
- In the AMEP an adult is a person who is 18 years and older.
- AMEP
- Adult Migrant English Program.
- AMEP learning centre
- AMEP English courses are provided at AMEP learning centres.
- Childcare
- People and services that look after your children who are under school
age while you attend AMEP English classes.
- Complaint
- Telling someone that you are unhappy with your teacher, your service provider, your classes or something another student has said or done.
- Compliment
- Telling someone that you are happy with your teacher, your service provider or your classes.
- Distance Learning
- Learning English at home, using your computer work books, tapes
and talking to a teacher on the telephone.
- Eligibility
- If you can join English courses through the AMEP. Your AMEP service provider can tell you if you are eligible to join the AMEP.
- English course
- Is a class where you can learn English at an AMEP service provider.
- Feedback
- Information that is given to you by your AMEP service provider about how you are going in English classes, your behaviour or a complaint or compliment you have made.
- Full-time tuition
- Full-time is defined as a minimum of 20 hours study per week (up to 15 hours face to face and 5 hours of independent learning per week).
- Functional English
- Functional English is assessed by your AMEP service provider at ISLPR 2. This is when you can speak, read, write and listen to English well enough to participate in Australian society. Your AMEP service provider will tell you when you have reached this level of English.
- Home tutor
- A person who comes to your home to help you learn English.
- Interpreter
- An Interpreter assists people who speak different languages to communicate with each other. They do this by transferring information verbally from one language into another.
- Part-time tuition
- Part-time is defined as a less than full-time (less than 20 hours per week).
- Practise
- Using English as much as possible so you remember it better.
- Register
- Telling a service provider that you would like to go to their English classes.
- Translator
- A translator transfers written information from one language into another.
