Delivering Assistance

Who are our Clients?

The Government is committed to ensuring that all migrants, including refugees and other humanitarian entrants settle effectively. Settlement programmes reflect expectations about the three broad streams of Australia 's migration intake.

Skilled Migrants

Skilled migrants are selected for migration because they have very good employment and settlement prospects. They are generally well educated and have good English language skills. It is expected that skilled migrants will be self-reliant and able to negotiate Australia 's social and economic systems quickly and effectively with little need for assistance from government.

Family Migrants

Family migrants are sponsored by Australians who are close relatives, such as parents, spouses or fiancé(e)s. They are more skilled and have better English than many arriving in the past, and it is expected that their sponsor will assist the new arrival(s) to settle.

Humanitarian Entrants

Humanitarian entrants, including refugees, arrive after experiencing dislocation and trauma and generally do not have the same level of English language proficiency as other migrant groups. It is recognised that they will need help from the government, as well as the community, to have the best chance of settling effectively.
