What Programs are Being Funded?
The department provides resources for settlement programs that assist migrants' and humanitarian entrants' early settlement and complement mainstream services provided for all Australians. The department provides funding for:
- the provision of English language tuition through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
- on-site and telephone interpreting and translating, through the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS)
- financial grants to community and service organisations through the Settlement Grants Program (SGP)
- humanitarian settlement services, including through the Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Strategy (IHSS)
In recent years programs funded by the department have been reviewed to improve the quality and accessibility of services, especially for disadvantaged clients. At the same time there has been an increased emphasis on cost-effectiveness, including reducing costs to the community and, where appropriate, increasing revenue from clients with the ability to pay. These reforms are consistent with the Government's broader objectives of ensuring that migrants and humanitarian entrants settle effectively, with a maximum benefit to Australia.
