Review of Settlement Services

A major Review of Settlement Services for Migrants and Humanitarian Entrants was conducted by the department in 2003.

The department received input to the Review through public consultations, attended by over 1000 people, and through more than 140 written submissions. The Refugee Resettlement Advisory Council acted as an external reference group and discussions were held with mainstream agencies. A departmental steering group of senior officials provided overall direction for the Review.

The result was the publication of a report that emphasised that Australia 's settlement services are advanced by world standards but which also outlined areas where there was room for improvement.

The Report of the Review of Settlement Services for Migrants and Humanitarian Entrants was released in May 2003. The Review report contains 61 recommendations, endorsed by the government, outlining improvements to settlement services and to other Australian Government services. Most of the recommendations have been implemented and the remainder are currently being progressed.

The report is available below.
