Humanitarian Entrants - What happens when I arrive?
When you arrive in Australia and get off the aircraft, you will have to go to immigration, collect your baggage, and pass through customs in a secure part of the airport. The immigration official checks your Document for Travel to Australia and stamps it with 'Not valid for further travel'. You then collect your baggage from the conveyor belt that is in use for your flight. A custom's staff member checks your baggage using an x-ray machine or a search. If they find an illegal item, you did not declare, you pay a large fine. You then leave the secure area of the arrival terminal. There may be people to meet you at this point.
The first point of arrival in Australia may not be where you are travelling on to and going to live. If you are to travel to another location by air, you may get help from a caseworker or airport staff to find your next flight.
