A Diverse Australia

Programs

Government programs respond to Australia's cultural diversity, in partnership with governments and community organisations, seeking to meet the challenges, maximise the benefits and promote unity for all Australians.

Living in Harmony

The Living in Harmony program seeks to promote social cohesion and address issues of racial, religious and cultural intolerance.

To date, the program has produced 388 community projects, 49 partnerships, 9 emerging priority programs and Harmony Day activities since 1999.

Living in Harmony is implemented  through three funding programs and a public information strategy.

Links with communities

The Australian Government is committed to building and maintaining effective linkages with our diverse communities to encourage community harmony and social cohesion. The government engages closely with community and government organisations across Australia to foster connections and to identify and manage community relations issues. Threats to community harmony are swiftly and strongly condemned at a high level.

The Community Information Summaries describe overseas-born communities by birthplace, and their descendants who are living in Australia.
