The City of Salisbury and Kaurna Aboriginal Community are working together to develop an Indigenous interpretive trail at the Kaurna Park wetlands site, part of the City of Salisbury's unique complex of urban wetlands.
The Tappa Wodliparri Trail project is designed to build community respect for Kaurna culture and history. It is also hoped that Kaurna Park will become a focus for reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The extensive Adelaide Plain wetlands were a tremendous source of economic and spiritual wealth for the Kaurna people. It is envisaged that through a partnership between the Kaurna community and the City of Salisbury, the unique Indigenous knowledge of wetlands can assist and improve future planning, management and interpretation of these unique spaces in the urban environment.
The Kaurna and other Indigenous Australians believe the land itself is like a university and a church, embodying the basis of their knowledge and spiritual power as told by the City of Adelaide:
' The setting up of the City of Adelaide and its Park Lands deprived our ancestors of the responsibility from maintaining crucial, culturally meaningful places. We, as Kaurna people must walk on these places to maintain our cultural strength.'
