The City of Melville developed a partnership with the local Chinese community, performers, service providers and residents to support the 2004 Chinese New Year celebrations. More than 1,000 people celebrated the diversity of the community, which promoted harmonious community relations and fostered a better understanding of the city's largest ethnic group through music, lion dances, and a Tai Chi sword demonstration. The celebration has now become an annual event with 2005 festivities ringing in the Year of the Rooster.
