Museum and tourist facility
2003 Strength in Diversity National Award for Local Government – rural winner

Goal
Bring the community together and provide local development and employment opportunities.
How?
Build an interpretive, educational and tourist facility to enhance visitors' experience and tell the stories of Indigenous, pioneer, Australian-born and migrant contributions to the local area.
The small shire (population 2,200) has worked hard together to realise the vision of The Kodja Place. With the active support from the Shire of Kojonup, the community came together to plan and build the centre and secure the necessary funding from federal, state and regional government agencies, including the Regional Solutions Program, ATSIC, Centenary of Federation grants, and the Lotteries Commission.
The Kodja Place integrates stories from pioneering and farming communities, the Indigenous Noongar and Wadjela people, and migrant Australians throughout the centre, including in the museum and the Rose Maze.
Kodja Place's existence and success provide a source of community pride, a community meeting place and a pivotal expression of the cultural make-up of Kojonup. As a concept, in its development, and in its ongoing contribution to the community, this project is a testament to Australian multiculturalism. It demonstrates how diversity, inclusiveness and mutual respect can work for and unite a community, and is a commendable example of reconciliation.
