The Getting to Know Your Local Council community education program is designed to improve understanding of systems and processes in government. It facilitates two-way communication, relationships between council and local communities and residents, and develops pathways for information transfer between local communities and council.

The program is tailored to the specific needs of a target group, and delivered over three or four weeks for two hours on nominated days. Each council department makes a presentation on its roles responsibilities, services and functions. The program provides time for role-play and questions.

Media releases promote the event and encourage participation. Participants are presented with a certificate of attendance by the mayor, and evaluations by the participants, workers and presenters provide continuing feedback.
