Anti-racism campaign

Anti-racism campaign

Goal

  • Combat negative media portrayals of culturally diverse groups
  • Combat racism
  • Affirm the respect, goodwill and understanding that Australians of all backgrounds display to each other

How?

The Hobart Networking for Harmony Committee, supported by Hobart City Council, has developed a multimedia campaign to acknowledge and celebrate Tasmania's local cultural diversity.

The campaign will reach a broad audience and has been developed by working closely with members of Hobart's culturally diverse communities.

The campaign is intended to portray the community belief that while we all come from different cultural backgrounds we are all Tasmanian, this is our home and living in harmony means accepting people for who they are.

The concept emerged from a Networking for Harmony group that has been in existence since 1999 when the Hobart City Council in association with various other councils, the Migrant Resource Centre, the Ethnic Community Council and a group called Australians for Reconciliation jointly applied for and received an Australian Government Living in Harmony grant to:

  • Coordinate local government, community and service organisations to address the challenges presented by cultural diversity
  • Address ignorant and racist attitudes in the community
  • Address the alienation felt by culturally diverse groups when dealing with community networks.
