Gunnedah International Cup and Cultural Exchange Weekend

Gunnedah International Cup and Cultural Exchange Weekend

Goal

Stimulate cross-cultural activity, help bridge the rural-city divide and promote harmony.

How?

Offer 150 Sydney-siders from a variety of cultures, mostly with refugee backgrounds, a chance to 'go bush' for a weekend of sports and cultural exchanges.

This project brought together agencies, groups and individuals to provide young people with refugee backgrounds with a unique opportunity to experience 'good old fashioned country hospitality'.

The weekend activities included a soccer tournament, museum visits, sheep shearing, a visit to a koala sanctuary, exposure to the local Indigenous culture and local entertainment at the Services Club. At the same time, Gunnedah residents were rewarded with an encounter with young people from diverse backgrounds and could learn more about their experiences. The project was unique not only because it was a city-bush cultural exchange, but also because many diverse cultures were represented.
