Celebrating Harmony Day 2003

Harmony Day
- Thinking about our community's success as a multicultural society.
- Re-committing to continuing respect, goodwill and understanding between all Australians of all backgrounds.
- Saying no to racism.
- In particular, celebrating and acknowledging the community harmony which exists in Griffith and its success as a harmonious and diverse community.
How?
In 2003 Griffith was selected to participate in a Harmony Day Regional Pilot. The pilot encouraged community organisations, business, schools and faith groups to come together to celebrate Harmony Day in a united community effort.
- Niru Yadav, a local artist, designed a special Harmony Day logo for Griffith.
- Over forty women from at least fifteen cultural backgrounds created a Let's live in harmony mural over six weeks.
- Griffith City Library had a special storytelling for children.
- Centrelink held a multicultural morning tea.
- Local businesses participated with activities such as decorating their premises with flags from the nations represented in their company, and multicultural lunches.
- A community celebration was held in the Memorial Gardens, and included a citizenship ceremony, multicultural games, traditional art and craft displays, performances by community groups, a sausage sizzle and bush tucker.
