'Getting fresh' - food safety training

‘Getting fresh’ - food safety training

Goal

Improve public health, ensure local businesses meet health regulations standards, and raise the profile of the benefits of local cultural diversity.

How?

Offer free training seminars in a range of languages to food handlers, and market real success in providing hygienic, fresh and diverse foods by providing participants with a training resource manual, a certificate and a getting fresh sticker to place in their shop window.

Fairfield City is the third most populated local government area in Sydney. More than half of Fairfield 's residents were born overseas and almost 95% of these were born in a non-English speaking country. It is also an area with the highest number and proportion (66%) of speakers of languages other than English and it has the highest proportion of residents who do not speak English well. As a result of its diversity, the area has also become known for its ability to cater to a variety of tastes with a wide range of food available throughout the city.

The Getting fresh program is offered in a range of languages and has involved over 300 businesses. It builds knowledge and profile among traders, and pride in local cultural diversity among residents.
