Canterbury Inter-faith Harmony Project

Goal

Strengthen the relationship between different faith and religious groups in the community.

How?

Coordinate a series of inter-faith meetings to explore the concept of faith as a unifying force.

The Canterbury Inter-faith Harmony Project brings together diverse religious and faith groups to facilitate inter-faith discourse and strengthen relations between religious and ethnic communities. The project aims to explore the concept of faith as a unifying factor rather than a dividing factor, and to promote greater understanding between religious organisations and community leaders.

Through this project, the local government has promoted positive relations within the community, enhanced positive attitudes to community harmony, and increased the capacity to counteract religious bigotry. Highlights of the project include bi-monthly meetings of religious leaders to encourage contact and information exchange, tours of places or worship for schools and the general public, inter-faith discussion groups in high schools, and an online and media publicity campaign.

This project was supported by the department through the Living in Harmony community grants program.
