Amendment to Minister's Power to Specify Relevant Assessing Authorities

From 23 April 2007 the Migration Regulations 1994 (‘the Regulations’) will be amended to:
- enable the Minister to specify, in an instrument in writing, a person or body as the relevant assessing authority for a skilled occupation in respect of applications for a skills assessment by residents of specified countries
- enable the Minister to specify the relevant person or body on the written approval of either the Minister for Education, Science and Training or the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations.
The amendments will be made on 23 April 2007, however, they will not commence until 1 July 2007.

The following provision of the Regulations will be amended:

Additional information:
The amendments are being made to give effect to the Council of Australian Governments recommendation to offer offshore skills assessments. The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) has tendered for the provision of these offshore skills assessments.
Tenderers for DEWR RFT 2007/06 may wish to note that these amendments provide the regulatory framework for successful tenderers to be appointed as Relevant Assessing Authorities.
Transitional arrangements:
The amendments apply in relation to the making or consideration of an application for a skills assessment on or after 1 July 2007.
