The Migration Regulations 1994 have been amended to clarify the operation of the Sydney and Selected Areas Skilled Shortage List (SSASSL).
From 2 April 2005, an applicant for a Skilled - Australian-Sponsored (Migrant) (Class BQ) visa, whose sponsor resides in an area, defined in a Gazette Notice, that incorporates Sydney and selected areas of New South Wales, must nominate a skilled occupation on the SSASSL on their application for skilled migration to Australia.. Class BQ applicants must also demonstrate that they have recent work experience in an occupation on the SSASSL. Under the amendments, an application for a Class BQ visa must be accompanied by a sponsorship form completed by the applicant's sponsor, to be a valid application.
All other applicants for skilled migration are required to nominate skilled occupation that appears on the broader Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and demonstrate that they have recent work experience in a SOL occupation.
Technical details
Definition of "skilled occupation" in regulation 1.03 of the Principal Regulations amended. New paragraph 1128B(3)(d) inserted in Schedule 1 to the Principal Regulations.
