Overview

The Migrant Resource Centre of South Australia (MRCSA) conducts a series of initiatives that bridge the gap between South Australia Police (SAPOL) and refugee community groups in South Australia. These projects are part of an ongoing program that contributes to the successful settlement and integration of newly-arrived refugees, their families and communities.

Community education partnership between MRCSA and SAPOL

A series of brochures has been developed by the MRCSA to raise the awareness of new arrivals about the justice system in Australia. Translated into a number of languages, the brochures focus on family law, young people and the law, the role of police, rights as a consumer and buying a home or car.

The police brochure was developed in close collaboration with SAPOL.

Early intervention in policing and responding

A police working group has been established to provide opportunities for police and the MRCSA to regularly discuss any issues that arise with new and emerging communities. The meetings are also a good opportunity to discuss any anticipated problems and to develop strategies for responding to these in a positive way.

Meetings often result in the intervention of community leaders, targeted community education or a home visit by police services and a trusted interpreter.

The working group also includes representation from peak bodies of African and Middle Eastern communities and other key stakeholders.

Youth leaders bridging the gap between police services and their communities

The Youth Leaders Initiative of the MRCSA develops the leadership skills of young people from refugee backgrounds so they can support and mentor other young people in their communities and advocate on justice issues on their behalf.

Facilitating their participation in key events such as the Youth Parliament and the Youth Leaders Conference has enabled these young people to develop their knowledge and confidence. It also provides an opportunity to actively engage with the police as a means of breaking down stereotypes on both sides, and fostering a sense of trust and camaraderie.

Police participation in community events

Encouraging the active participation of the police in social, cultural and recreational events organised by various MRCSA programs supports positive engagement, creates trust and fosters cooperation between new and emerging communities and police services. Police services have participated and supported Worldfest, SA Refugee Week, soccer carnivals, youth camps and other important events.
