Multicultural Futsal

Overview

This project is a great opportunity for young former refugees to participate in a sporting competition with other young Australians through Futsal (indoor soccer).

With five different nationalities represented on the team, the games break down barriers and help encourage networking between cultural groups.

What are the aims of the project?

The project aims to provide an opportunity for young people from a mix of ethnic backgrounds to get involved, build community spirit and at the same time learn about Australian laws.

The program creates positive opportunities to participate in recreation activities and to mix with other cultural groups. It reduces the chance of these youth developing anti-social behaviours by getting them actively involved in organised activities.

The games also provide a chance for migrants and overseas students to socialise and practice their language skills. Importantly, the project encourages everyone to learn about and abide by Australian laws.

What was involved?

Teams were recruited from Companion House (assisting survivors of torture and trauma in the ACT region), the Multicultural Youth Centre in Civic ACT, and the Canberra Institute of Technology English classes (Reid campus).

The project was funded by the Australia Federal Police's ACT Policing and the Canberra Police and Citizens Youth Club.

Who participated?

The pilot program involved 11 players from Sudan, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and India.

What were the outcomes?

The continued attendance of the youth at the Futsal games and team spirit which is building amongst the players is very encouraging. An unexpected and positive outcome has been the regular attendance of spectators from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Some of these spectators have indicated an interest in playing in the future.

The program has been very easy to manage.
