Skill level

Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine
The Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine is the professional body that assesses the specialist qualification of Medical Scientist (Medical Physicist) (ASCO 2115-11).
A Medical Physicist is someone with substantial tertiary qualifications in physics who applies their knowledge of the principles of physics to the care of patients. This can include but is not limited to radiation oncology medical physics, and the physics of radiological imaging and nuclear medicine medical physics.
Applicants for skills assessment must usually possess a qualification that is at least comparable to the following Australian qualifications and in some cases have full-time work experience as a Medical Physicist:
- A four year degree in Medical Physics; or
- A four year degree in Physics plus 12 months full-time employment as a Medical Physicist; or
- A four year degree in physics plus a Masters or PhD degree in Medical Physics; or
- A three year degree in Physics plus 18 months full-time employment as a Medical Physicist; or
- A three year degree in Physics plus a Masters degree in Medical Physics and 6 months full time employment as a Medical Physicist; or
- A three year degree in Physics plus a PhD degree in Medical Physics.
Registration with the ACPSEM in Australia is not a prerequisite for recognition or practice as a Medical Physicist. However, membership of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine may enhance employment prospects and is the first step towards professional identity.
