Skills assessment authority
Before you can migrate to Australia as a skilled migrant you must have your skills assessed by the relevant national assessment authority. The assessment authority for your occupation is:
Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS)
The Australian Institute of Medical Scientists is the professional body that assesses the qualifications of Medical Scientists (ASCO 2115-11) and Medical Laboratory Technical Officer (ASCO 3111-11).
The definition of these two classifications is quite narrow and specific. Medical scientists and medical laboratory technical officers work in diagnostic pathology laboratories and perform medical laboratory tests on blood, other body fluids and tissues to assist clinicians in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
Applicants for skills assessment must usually possess an AIMS accredited professional bachelor degree in medical laboratory science or laboratory medicine; or a relevant science degree and successful completion of either the Membership or Fellowship examination of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists; or a relevant science degree and successful completion of either the Australian Society of Cytology or the International Academy of Cytology examination.
Registration with the AIMS in Australia is not a prerequisite for recognition or practice as a medical scientist. However membership of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists may enhance employment prospects and is the first step towards professional identity.
