Output 1.4       Safe haven

Objective

The objective of this programme is to provide temporary safe haven in Australia for people displaced by upheaval in their country.

Description

This output provides temporary safe haven in Australia for those people who have been displaced by upheaval in their country and for whom the government considers the most appropriate assistance to be temporary safe haven.

In 2005-06, there were 14 people who had held subclass 449 Humanitarian Stay (Temporary) visas for some years and were granted permanent visas. A further 12 people (who had been located at the offshore processing centre in Nauru) were granted subclass 449 Humanitarian Stay (Temporary) visas and then subsequently granted subclass 786 Temporary (Humanitarian Concern) visas.

In May 2006, there were 54 people from East Timor, who had been in particularly vulnerable situations and were granted Humanitarian Stay (Temporary) visas for a period of three months.

Analysis of performance

At 30 June 2006, there were 54 people who held safe haven visas, an increase of 40 on the number at 30 June 2005.
