Sub-program 4.2: Citizenship
Objective
To grant citizenship to eligible people so they can participate fully in Australian society.
Description
The citizenship sub-program covers policy on Australian citizenship and the planning and delivery of citizenship services.
Citizenship and Language Services Branch administers the sub-program, with the support of state and territory offices in relation to service delivery.
Citizenship services are available to clients of all DIMA state and territory offices in Australia and from Australian posts overseas. Designated Australia Post offices offer citizenship interviewing services. Citizenship ceremonies are normally held by local governments, and the Department offers ceremonies in urgent or compassionate circumstances.
Performance information
Outcomes are measured by the extent to which:
- citizenship inquiries, applications and conferrals are effectively managed;
- improvements are made to the system of citizenship character checks submitted to the Police Reference System maintained by the National Exchange of Police Information;
- client services were improved under the contract with Australia Post for the conduct of citizenship interviews at designated Australia Post outlets;
- accurate and timely citizenship policy advice is provided to Minister and others;
- support is provided to the Australian Citizenship Council;
- 50th anniversary of Australian citizenship celebrations have been implemented.
