Sub-program 2.3: Unauthorised Arrivals

Objective

To prevent the entry into the Australian community of unauthorised arrivals and remove those who are not entitled to stay.

Description

This sub-program is responsible for coordinating entry processing and removal of all unauthorised arrivals, regardless of mode of transport to Australia, including Indonesian illegal fishermen.

Compliance and Enforcement Branch provided policy development and program support. Teams of departmental officers mobilised from offices across Australia undertook entry processing of unauthorised boat arrivals. DIMA airport inspectors undertook entry processing of unauthorised arrivals at airports.

Performance information

These include:

  1. promptness and efficiency with which reception and processing of unauthorised arrivals occurs;
  2. timely removal of those unauthorised arrivals who are not entitled to stay;
  3. providing support for the prosecution of those involved in people smuggling activities; and
  4. negotiations undertaken bilaterally and where appropriate regionally and multilaterally, with source, transit and destination countries to discourage unauthorised arrivals and identify those seeking to enter Australia.
