Sub-program 2.2: Detention

Objective

To provide for lawful, appropriate and economical detention of non-citizens not entitled to enter or remain in Australia.

Description

This sub-program is responsible for administering the detention provisions of the Migration Act 1958 and managing the operation of the Department's immigration detention facilities. Facilities are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Port Headland. Australasian Correctional Services Pty Ltd provides detention services at all immigration detention centres.

Policy development and program support was provided by the Compliance Policy and Detention Branch.

Performance information

Outcomes are measured by the extent to which:

  1. there are timely removals of unlawful non-citizens;
  2. the provision of detention services is cost-effective; and
  3. lawful and appropriate detention arrangements are made for those unlawful non-citizens in detention.
