About the Department

DIMA Annual Report 1996-97

Role, mission and corporate goals

The Department's role is to manage the movement of people into and out of Australia.

The Department's Mission, adopted by the former Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs in its 1994-96 Corporate Plan, is to enhance the benefits to Australia from the entry of people and their contribution to Australia's well-being.

The 1994-96 Corporate Plan identified seven key result areas that outline the Department's major goals and strategies, and how the Department's achievements will be measured. The seven key result areas are:

1. Working with the Minister;

2. Working with the community;

3. Responding to humanitarian needs;

4. Internationalising Australia;

5. Valuing our clients;

6. Valuing staff; and

7. Achieving organisational excellence.

A new departmental Corporate Plan is under development.
