Our population’s diversity is a defining characteristic of modern Australia. It gives our nation significant economic and social advantages from which all Australians benefit. We also all have associated responsibilities to make the most of the opportunities and respond to the challenges arising from our cultural, religious and linguistic diversity–individuals, businesses, community organisations and governments.
The Australian Government accepts its leadership role, especially that of improving the fairness of its policies, programs and services, encouraging engagement in society and providing opportunities for all Australians. Sections 3.1 to 3.5 report the responses of Australian Government agencies to the diversity of their clients and the Australian population in general, under the Access and Equity Framework principles of Responsiveness, Communication, Accountability and Leadership (see Appendix B for more details of the framework). The focus is on older Australians, women and Humanitarian Program entrants.
Section 3.6 presents examples of access and equity ‘good practice’ across state, territory and local governments.
