Work Experience Program
The department is able to accommodate a limited number of work experience placements at National Office in Canberra. Due to the nature of the department's portfolio and its legislative responsibility to ensure privacy and security of information, state and territory offices are unable to accommodate work experience placements.
Type of work available
The department's Work Experience Program offers students general offices roles, with the exception of journalism, legal, and information technology students who may be placed in a business area related to their studies. The department is unable to place foreign language students in an area where they can use their language skills.
Conditions
In order for a student to be considered for the department's Work Experience Program:
- The student must be undertaking studies in Year 12 or above
- The student's educational institution must provide indemnity cover for the duration of the placement
- The student must be an Australian Citizen
- The student must satisfy a Police Records Check
- The student must sign a non-disclosure document in which they agree to the protection of privileged and confidential information
- The work experience placement must be completed at no cost to the department
- The request for placement must be made at least one month in advance
- The department must be able to accommodate the placement.
Work experience requests
Requests for Year 12 students must be received from the school Career Advisor/Work Experience Coordinator. Tertiary students can send a request directly.
A written request must include the following information:
- The student's name
- The student's education institution
- The year the student is undertaking
- The course the student is undertaking
- The preferred commencement and finishing dates for placement
- The duration of placement and the hours to be attended at the department
- The student's preference for a type of work or business area.
