About the Department

About the Program

The ICT Professional Development Program recruits high quality people each year who are interested in a career with the department. The program runs from February to December and provides developmental opportunities through on-the-job learning and formal training. Participants will acquire a skills and knowledge base to allow them to contribute meaningfully and gain an understanding of departmental operations and culture.

All positions are located in Canberra at the National Office.

Formal training

Formal training commences with a comprehensive two and a half day Orientation program which provides the necessary overview of the department and the corporate plan as well as sessions on desktop systems, security, values and code of conduct, occupational health and safety, emergency management, performance management and employment conditions.

The program also provides three blocks of formal training with professional, technical and personal development opportunities. Topics include working in teams, interpersonal skills, business systems analysis, IT project management, ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library), writing skills, job application and interviewing skills and eLearning.

Work rotations

ICT Professionals are offered work rotations to provide exposure to the Divisions’ diverse operations. They are placed in permanent positions at the end of the year.

Ongoing training

The section you will be placed in may provide ongoing training specific to the work area as required.
