2010 Generalist Graduate Intake Selection and Recruitment Process

Stage one - application (Closes 13 April 2009)

Applications for the 2010 Generalist Graduate Development Program open online from 5 March 2009, and will close 11:30pm EST Monday 13 April 2009.

Late applications will not be accepted.

The department considers information provided in the application form including academic results (undergraduate Bachelor degree), and claims against the selection criteria.

Responses to each criterion will be assessed by a panel of departmental officers. Short-listed applicants will successfully progress to stage two.

Stage two - online assessment (May 2009)

Prior to completing the online assessment short-listed applicants will be invited to information briefing sessions to be held in ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, VIC and WA. Sessions times and details will be advised closer to the date.

  • applicants will undertake a 20 minute online assessment.

The assessment is designed to measure an applicant’s critical analysis skills, natural verbal intelligence and numerical reasoning. It assesses an applicant’s strengths and provides an indication of how they are likely to perform in the job role. It is an aid to selection. Short-listed applicants will successfully progress to stage three.

Stage three - interview and work sample assessment (Late June/July 2009)

A face-to-face behavioural based interview will be conducted by a two member panel in the applicant’s home state/territory. Applicants will be asked to complete a written work sample assessment.

  • the interview and work sample assessment should take no more than 1.5 hours. The interview will have a behavioural focus, i.e. explore capabilities demonstrated in the past
  • applicants will need to bring to the interview a certified copy of their academic transcript, evidence of Australian citizenship and two passport photographs
  • for applicants overseas or in a regional area of Australia, interviews will be conducted via telephone.

Stage four - offer (August 2009)

If an applicant is successful in gaining an offer for a position in the 2010 Graduate Development Program:

  • they will receive a telephone call, followed by formal employment commencement documentation
  • the department will provide a Relocation Assistance subject to individual circumstance.
  • they will commence employment with the department in early February.
